"Laurie is an absolute pleasure to work with. Her knowledge of Orkney & Shetland was a huge asset for Lonely Planet's Scotland guidebook, and her enthusiasm and responsiveness ensured that the project went off without a hitch. I want to visit the Shetlands after reading Laurie's chapter!"

Looking for an experienced and engaging travel writer?
Hi, I’m Laurie, and I’ve been blogging since 2018 but have been rooted in the Scottish islands since 1987. I’m passionate about islands, sustainable travel, family travel and history – with the odd whisky or three thrown in for good measure! If you’re looking for content packed with travel inspiration, cultural history by the bucket load, and destination advice, then let’s chat. I provide copy for magazines, newspapers, websites, and blogs, as well as accommodation reviews, unforgettable experiences and itinerary planning.
Destination Specialist
For an engaging island travel blogger with a background in Scotland’s cultural history – look no further.
My expertise lies in Shetland and Orkney, where I have worked with Lonely Planet as the Northern Isles writer for their latest Scotland Guide book. My blog predominantly focuses on Shetland, but islands run deep through my veins. I’ve visited over 30 inhabited Scottish islands on my travels, writing about the experiences as I go and unpicking the nuances of island life. My favourite island to date, a real WOW island, was St Kilda, Scotland’s most remote island archipelago, now uninhabited.
Who I’ve worked with
As a Lonely Planet writer, I’ve contributed chapters and essays for the Experience Scotland guidebook and the latest Scotland guidebook.
I provide regular blogs for NorthLink Ferries website and onboard magazine.
I edited Shetland Life, a monthly lifestyle magazine, for 12 months.
I’ve done blog campaigns with Visit Scotland, NorthLink Ferries, Promote Shetland, Destination Orkney, Highland Safaris, Speyside Tours, and many more small, independent accommodation providers along the way.
I’ve provided in-depth research pieces and travel writing features for Shetland Wool Adventures Journal, Shetland Wool Week Annual, The New Shetlander, Coontin Kin, English Now Magazine, Waitrose Weekend and Hear It from Locals.
I regularly contribute blogs and features for the Hidden Scotland website and Hidden Scotland Journal.
I’ve been featured on TV’s BBC Breakfast, Ben Fogle’s Sacred Islands and regularly contribute to BBC Radio Scotland shows.
I write a monthly political commentary for the Shetland Times newspaper.
I published a book in 2013, Guddicks: Traditional Riddles from Shetland.
I have an engaged online following that I’ve built over the past four years, who are looking for my honest advice, travel advice, and personalised recommendations tried and tested.
I can offer
Review stays – my followers love nothing more than a good recommendation, tried and tested, and I have worked with many local accommodation providers, boosting their online presence and driving sales.
Itinerary planning – whether you are looking for a full itinerary to save you the hassle of planning, or just a travel consultation to iron out all those little questions. Book a session with me today.
Content creation/blog campaigns – I love to promote Scotland, and the islands, in particular, sharing my travels on my blog and social media channels, reaching a travel-hungry audience! Connect with my fast-growing and highly engaged Instagram audience, and get the longevity of content with high-quality copy and accompanying photography with a sponsored blog post.
Blogs – I research and supply blogs and feature-length copy for websites, magazines and newspapers on Scottish destinations, particularly the islands.
Social media marketing – I only work with brands that I love, and I’m not interested in promoting things that don’t align with my interests and values. If you want to chat about social media marketing, email me to enquire about collaboration.

Why Laurie?
I’m passionate about painting the islands in their truest colours without the gloss of traditional marketing. Our islands are living, breathing communities, and I seek to capture that essence of community and place in my writing. I seek to uncover the best experiences and the hidden gems found around every corner.
I have a wealth of experience under my belt
I’m an islander by birth
I studied Scottish history at university and worked for 10 years in museums
I’m a trained tour guide, accredited by the Scottish Tour Guide Association
I edited a local magazine for 12 months before focusing solely on my blog
I appeared on Ben Fogle’s Sacred Islands where I spoke about the deep sense of belonging that I have to the islands
I’ve submitted chapters for two Lonely Planet Scotland guidebooks in recent years
I’m writing a book about the history of Shetland – this is my passion project and is definitely a slow burner!
I have two bairns – that’s what we call children – who I drag on most of my adventures, but I also like to have weekend getaways without them – don’t we all!
I understand the need for good copy and the importance of SEO. My blog is well-read and visited, and I rank well on Google searches.
All these experiences led me to where I am today. I have a real passion for sharing Scotland, particularly our islands, and my blog quickly became the best outlet for this need to shout about the islands from the clifftop!
I felt hemmed in working in museums; I was surrounded by so much history and stories and felt that they weren’t told – my blog gave me an avenue to tell Scotland’s stories.
Storytelling is an important thread to my writing; the stories we tell are the glue that holds communities together and gives us that deep sense of belonging.
